The border

The DMZ is a half day from Seoul, and a working border.

Coaches leave central Seoul in the morning for the Third Infiltration Tunnel, the Dora observatory and the Imjin river crossings, about an hour north. Guides are licensed, the route is set by the military rather than the operator, and every passenger carries a passport. The line has been in place since the armistice of 1953 and is still staffed on both sides.

Departures do not run on Mondays or public holidays, and the itinerary can be shortened at short notice when the access road closes. Operators confirm the final route the evening before.

First-trip anchors

The days South Korea is known for.

Palace courtyards at opening time, a hanbok hired for the afternoon, the island tours on Jeju, the night markets in the old quarter. The handful of days most first trips are built around, and the best way to book each one.

Seoul

Seoul rewards an early start and a late finish.

Six hundred years of palace walls sit inside a city of twenty five million, and the good hours are at both ends of the day. Gyeongbokgung before the coaches, Bukchon while the lanes are still quiet, then the food alleys and the tower once the light goes.

Jeju

Jeju is a separate country with its own weather.

A volcanic island an hour south by air, built around Hallasan and ringed by lava coast. The east side has the sunrise crater and the haenyeo divers who still work it; the south has waterfalls and tangerine terraces. Tours run as full island loops because the bus network does not.

Busan

Busan is where South Korea gets its sea air.

The second city is a port with beaches inside it. A painted hillside village above the harbour, a coastal train that runs on the old track bed, fish markets the size of terminals, and Gyeongju two hours up the line when you want the tombs.

Only here

Three things you can only book in South Korea.

Palaces and mountains exist everywhere. Renting a five-hundred-year-old silhouette for the afternoon, sleeping in a working mountain temple and standing in a broadcast studio do not.

Worn, not displayed

Hanbok for the Afternoon

Rental shops ring the east gate of Gyeongbokgung and hire out hanbok by the hour, hairpins and underskirt included. The practical reason to do it is that anyone wearing hanbok walks into the four royal palaces free, which is why the courtyards fill with colour on any dry weekend. Two hours is the usual slot and the good studios take the morning bookings first.

A bed in a working temple

The Temple Stay

Around one hundred and forty Korean temples run an official overnight programme, and the mountain ones are the reason to bother. Lights out is early, the wake-up drum is at three or four, and the day is built around a shared meal eaten in silence from four bowls. Most sites take foreign visitors in English on fixed weekends rather than on demand.

The Studio Floor

Seoul exports its television, and the studios sell access to it. Broadcast tours put you in a live rehearsal gallery in Sangam, and the drama sets an hour south at Dae Jang Geum Park are standing streets rather than facades. The dance shows in Hongdae run nightly and seat a few hundred, so they are the easier half of this to plan.

Before the flight

Book these before you land in South Korea.

Most of the country can be arranged from a hotel lobby the night before. These four cannot. They run on fixed seasons, timed slots and kitchens that hold six people.

  1. 01Jeju East: Cherry Blossom Early Bird Tour with Hotel PickupThe bloom lasts about ten days and the dates move by a fortnight from year to year. Seats are sold long before anyone can say when it will open.
  2. 02Hanbok Rental with Gyeongbokgung Palace EntryWearing hanbok makes palace admission free, so the rental studios by Gyeongbokgung run at capacity every dry weekend.
  3. 03Local Home Korean Cooking Class & Market Adventure in SeoulThese run in home kitchens and cap at six or eight people. The market shop happens first, so the morning slots go before the afternoon ones.
  4. 04Nami Island, K-drama Garden & Rail Bike Day TourThe Gangchon line runs on timed departures and a fixed number of carriages. Autumn weekends sell out weeks ahead.
Rain and cold

What to book when Seoul is under jangma rain or snow.

The summer rains arrive around late June and sit for a month, and January runs below freezing for weeks. Neither cancels the best of the country, because so much of it happens indoors: a home kitchen and a market bag, a craft bench, a colour analysis studio, a gallery, a bathhouse afternoon.
